According to media reports A glowing round object making a speedy descent near the West Bengal-Bihar border early on January 26 left pilots of five aircraft baffled, triggering widespread speculation about UFO.
The first person to sight the object was a senior Air India pilot who was navigating the aircraft at a height of 34,000 ft during its flight from Kolkata to New Delhi.
"The plane was just entering the airspace of Gaya, close to Bengal-Bihar border, when I first noticed the glowing object, below the aircraft, hurtling down at a very high speed," Captain Rishi was quoted as saying by the Air Traffic Control (ATC) Tower here at Dum Dum International Airport.
The Air India pilot initially didn't pay much attention as it is customary for the pilots to notice several such things midair. But when the aircraft was close to Varanasi, the object was still brightly visible.
Without wasting time, he informed the Varanasi Air Traffic Control from where ATC, Kolkata, was alerted.
The officials at ATC pondered over whether pilots of other international flights that might have crossed the Kolkata-Bihar-Varanasi route, had also observed the glowing object reported by Capt Rishi.
Accordingly, the ATC, Kolkata, beamed asking signals for other international flights that flew the same airspace during the period concerned.
To their utter surprise, the air traffic control officials were told by as many as four foreign airlines flight pilots that they had seen the same object and all of them reiterated that it was falling down at a great speed!
FinAir of Finland and Novou Air of Sweden were flying from the West to East while a couple of flights of Cathay Pacific and Dynasty Airways of China were moving in the opposite direction at an altitude between 34,000 and 37,000 ft over the airspace supposed to be in the trajectory of the object.
Once the foreign airlines pilots radioed back the ATC tower here, confirming their sighting of the object, ATC engineers immediately got in touch with the Indian Air Force. However, the IAF engineers pointed out that their powerful radar had failed to track or notice any unusual object.

Scotland. Known for medieval castles, highlands, islands, clans, kilts and one large lake where a legendary beastie, the Loch Ness Monster, allegedly resides.
But for decades, Scotland has also been home to another mystery yet to be resolved: UFOs.
The country that occupies the northernmost section of Great Britain has its share of UFO reports, including an unusual pear-shaped object reported recently by a motorist on the UK UFO Sightings website.
UFO expert Ron Halliday has spent three decades investigating strange objects reported in Scotland, a country that has experienced an upsurge in UFO activity.
On the night of Jan. 2, in the East Kilbride area of Scotland, George King wrote: "I was sitting in my car, facing west, when I noticed two orange lights -- one smaller than the other -- flying low.
"I thought it was a police helicopter, but it kept coming, no noise, and suddenly shot up skywards right in front of me."
King added that he jumped out of his car to phone his son, when he noticed something else: "Saw a large, pear-shaped bubble-type thing heading towards Hamilton/Strathaven."
It wasn't the first time a UFO had been spotted in this part of Scotland, says UFO investigator Ron Halliday.
"It's an absolute puzzle why there've been so many UFO sightings here. You know, if we're talking about extraterrestrials visiting from other planets, I can't think of any reason whatsoever why they would choose to fly over this particular area," he told AOL News.
"This is the first pear-shaped object I've heard about."
Over the years, Scotland has had its share of reports, photos and videos of strange lights in the night sky, daytime metallic objects and even stories of alleged UFO abductions.
One of Scotland's most famous close encounters took place in 1992. Referred to locally as the A70 Abduction, the incident is the inspiration for a movie that is currently in production. Two men, traveling on the A70 roadway en route to the Scottish village of Tarbrax, spotted a large disc-shaped UFO hovering over the road ahead of them.
As they tried to pass under the unknown object, they reported their car was bathed in light and the next memory they had of the event was of being in total darkness. More importantly, they discovered that what should have been a 30-minute trip had taken nearly three hours.
Subsequent hypnosis sessions revealed a story of the men being abducted out of their car by small gray-colored beings, taken somewhere to be examined and then released.
After 30 years of examining UFO encounters including the A70 Abduction, Halliday, a former assistant registrar at the University of Stirling, says the descriptions of the mysterious objects in Scotland echo reports from other parts of the world.
"There's been all kinds. People have seen traditional disc-shaped things, some with glass-like domes on them. They've also reported long, rectangular objects and pyramid shapes, or diamond-shaped and triangular things," Halliday said.

The highest volcano in Colombia has been the scene of numerous UFO sightings in recent weeks, which according to some is due to extraterrestrials monitoring seismic activity in an effort to save the human race.
Locals in the border region between the two departments of Huila and Cauca, where the Volcan Nevada del Huila is situated, believe the UFOs to belong to extraterrestrial beings, and have documented sightings with pictures and video, reported Diario del Huila Tuesday.
These claims were backed by local UFO expert Ricardo Ayerbe, who told the newspaper that he has witnessed an increase in unidentified flying objects over the last decade.
Ayerbe explained that he is currently investigating the phenomenon and believes that alien beings have an interest in the geological area, which is at present at Level 3 risk level, meaning that there are changes in volcanic activity.
The activity of a number of volcanoes in the central Andes has not only caused alarm, but also provides a possible explanation for the UFO sightings, according to Ayerbe.
"Quite possibly these sightings are related to these geological events that have occurred in recent months. At the moment there have been sightings in areas of geological risk, because it seems they have an interesting in observing the risks that humanity is taking, surely with the purpose of intervening to try to save the race from these risks," he explained, apparently with a straight face.
